Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Fire Captain, the Firefighter is responsible for protecting life and property through firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, and emergency medical care. Firefighters also participate in fire prevention, public education, station maintenance, and training. This position requires rapid decision-making, physical and mental resilience, and a commitment to the mission and core values of the department: Readiness, Courage, and Service.

Notice: This position is designated as safety-sensitive under the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and applicable Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. Firefighters are required to perform duties that directly impact the safety of the public, coworkers, and themselves.

Employees in this classification are expected to report to duty free from the influence of drugs or alcohol and to maintain fitness for duty at all times. The use, possession, or impairment from drugs or alcohol while on duty, on call, or engaged in department operations is prohibited.

Employees in safety-sensitive positions may be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including but not limited to pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and other testing authorized by law and department policy.

Marijuana is included in drug screening panels. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt employees from testing requirements or from disciplinary action for positive test results, where permitted by law.

Requirements
Must be age 18-45, based on Fire Pension requirements.
Must pass a rigorous background investigation and criminal history check prior to hire.
High school diploma or GED.
Possess and Maintain a Valid Oklahoma Driver's License with insurable record.
Possess and Maintain a National Registry EMT-B certification (or higher).
Possess and Maintain a State of Oklahoma EMT-B certification.
IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter I certification.
NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications within one year.
Must meet the eligibility standards for enrollment in the Oklahoma State Firefighters Pension and Retirement System, which include a state-board-approved physical performance/agility test and medical physical exam.
Must have a current CPAT passing score with an Oklahoma technology center or participation in the Oklahoma State Firefighters Pension and Retirement Plan.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of fire behavior, suppression tactics, EMS protocols, and hazardous materials.
Knowledge of fire prevention, fire code inspection, and public safety education techniques.
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks under stressful and hazardous conditions.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with the public.
Proficiency in operating emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, and power/manual tools.
Familiarity with local streets, hydrant locations, and building construction types.
Ability to maintain accurate records, complete reports, and follow written protocols.
Commitment to professional development, team success, and public service.
Capacity to maintain emotional resilience and make sound decisions under pressure.
Essential Duties
Responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous material incidents, and other emergencies.
Suppress fires using hose lines, ladders, ventilation tools, extinguishers, and other equipment.
Performs emergency medical care consistent with EMT-B licensure; may assist with ALS care under supervision.
Conducts search and rescue operations in structure fires, vehicle accidents, and other hazardous situations.
Operates and maintains firefighting apparatus, tools, PPE, and SCBA equipment.
Participates in salvage and overhaul to protect property and prevent rekindling.
Assists with hazardous material identification, decontamination, and mitigation.
Conducts gross decontamination and exposure reduction after fire or hazmat events.
Participates in pre-incident planning, fire inspections, hydrant testing, and fire prevention activities.
Conducts public education, community outreach, and station tours.
Completes daily station duties including cleaning, restocking, minor repairs, and apparatus checks.
Participates in ongoing fire, EMS, rescue, and hazardous materials training.
Operates fire apparatus and performs pumping operations when assigned and qualified.
Utilizes department software, mobile data terminals, CAD, and RMS for accurate documentation and reporting.
Demonstrates teamwork, emotional control, and respect for the chain of command.
Maintains situational awareness and adheres to personnel accountability and scene safety procedures.
Actively contributes to department committees, improvement projects, and assigned collateral duties.
Works in a manner safe to the individual and other people; keeps work area clean and safe; follows safety rules and safe work practices; uses safety equipment as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must lift or carry up to 100 pounds frequently and perform physically strenuous tasks over extended periods.
Must operate in and around IDLH environments wearing full PPE and SCBA, which significantly increases heat stress and impairs mobility.
Regular exposure to:
Extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing duties and perform physically demanding work in hot (>250 deg. F) and humid (up to 100%) atmospheres while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body cooling mechanisms.
Smoke, flames, and toxic gases including carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and other combustion byproducts
Structural collapse, electrocution hazards, confined spaces, and fall risks
Biohazards including bloodborne and airborne pathogens (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B/C, TB)
Loud noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, and chaotic or traumatic scenes
Works on slippery, uneven, or elevated surfaces including rooftops, ladders, ice, or mud.
Operates in hazardous traffic conditions and near moving vehicles.
Experiences sudden transitions from rest to maximal exertion without warm-up.
May encounter traumatic injuries, deceased individuals, and other psychologically stressful situations.
Utilizes manual and power tools while wearing restrictive gear.
Requires constant vigilance to maintain personal and team safety in high-risk environments.
