Starting Salary: $18.89–$20.67 (depending on experience)
ABOUT THIS POSITIONS: The Animal Services Officer I performs general-duty animal control work enforcing laws and ordinances. They ensure public safety and help prevent, detect, and investigate animal-related crimes. Work is varied and regularly involves an element of danger.
Incumbent must be available and willing to work varying shifts, extended hours, emergency call-outs, and weekends as necessary. A great degree of independent judgment is required, within the limit of well-defined guidelines and laws.
This position REQUIRES working on weekends—they work 11:30 am to 8:00 pm with either Monday/Tuesday off or Thursday/Friday off.
This is a Safety Sensitive Position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- At least 21 years of age (required to obtain required certification)
- Up to 6 months of related experience and/or training (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patrol an assigned area and enforce laws and City ordinances that pertain to animals
- Answer calls and handle situations regarding wild and domestic animals
- Issue citations, investigate crimes, and interview those involved
- Search for and preserve evidence
- Prepare reports
- Speak before the public and in court (as needed)
- Educate citizens regarding proper animal care
- Examine animals to determine general health and well-being
- Transport and re-home animals, either in the shelter or in the wild
- Capture and handle all types of animals
- Conduct euthanasia procedures and dispose of deceased animals
- Obtain Chemical Euthanasia Tech certification
NECESSARY SKILLS:
- Ability to handle emotionally charged situations involving people and animals
- Ability to react with discretion and authority in emergency situations
- Availability and willingness to work varying shifts, extended hours, emergency call-outs, and weekends as necessary
- Ability to meet the required physical standards for this position
- Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug, physical, and audio screenings
