Title: Sanitation Driver
Department Sanitation - Public Works Department
Reports to: Sanitation Supervisor or Foreman
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Purpose of Position: The Sanitation Driver performs skilled work in the operation of refuse collection trucks collecting and hauling refuse of residential and commercial customers to the disposal site. The driver is the incumbent responsible for workers assigned to the truck.
Essential Job Functions [The driver will]:
1. Operate one of the cities refuse collection trucks and is responsible for the operation of the truck in a safe and efficient manner.
2. Have excellent driving skills and the ability to maneuver large vehicles in tight spaces.
3. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure its safe operation.
4. Be responsible for the safety of truck crew and any persons near the truck.
5. Have a strong commitment to safety and the ability to follow established safety procedures.
6. Follow established safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
7. Drive refuse truck to disposal site after filling truck to legal maximum.
8. Have good communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with customers and coworkers.
9. Follow designated routes, time schedules and accurately collect refuse from customers.
10. Report any mechanical issues or vehicle malfunctions to the supervisor for repairs.
11. Report any property damage or accidents immediately to the supervisor.
12. Learn the geography and street system of the city.
13. Clean and wash trucks as needed.
Education, Training and Experience Required:
High School Education/GED or equivalent training and 1 year of related sanitation/solid waste experience at carrier level or similar role.
Special Certificates, Registrations Licenses Required:
Must have a valid Oklahoma Commercial Driver’s License Class B with a clean driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and ability to safely operate city owned refuse trucks including, rear loaders with tippers, side loader, front loader, roll-off and grappling trucks.
Ability to lead work crew assigned to truck.
Ability to complete assignment of refuse routes, no pickup lists and handicap lists.
Ability to document notices to residents and provide the same to the supervisor.
Ability to perform the collection of bulky pickup items and document with forms and photos.
Physical/Mental Requirements:
Must be in good physical condition and able to climb, bend, stoop and lift heavy objects up to 100 lbs.
Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Must be able to work long hours as necessary.
Environmental Conditions and Safety Concerns:
Endure exposure to inclement weather conditions.
Work involves moderate risks and discomforts such as equipment vibration, dirt, dust, grease, irritant odors, chemicals and moving parts and/or objects.

Salary dependent upon experience.
