The City of Watonga, Oklahoma, operates under the Council-Manager form of government and is currently soliciting applications for the position of City Manager. Watonga is a city in Blaine County, located about 70 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. It is the county seat and was developed from a tent city established during a land run on April 19, 1892. The city was named after Arapaho Chief Wa-ton-gha, meaning Black Coyote. Local attractions include Roman Nose State Park and the Lucky Star Casino. Watonga has a population of 2,617, according to the 2024 census.
The selected candidate will be the chief executive officer and head of the administrative branch of the city government; shall execute the laws and administer the government of the city; and, shall be responsible to the Mayor and Council. The selected candidate will:
A. Appoint, and when necessary for the good of the service, remove, demote, lay off or suspend the city attorney, all heads of administrative departments and other administrative officers and employees of the city except as otherwise provided by law. The manager or the council by ordinance may authorize the head of a department, office or agency to appoint and remove the subordinates in such department, office or agency.
B. Supervise and control all administrative departments, officers and agencies.
C. Prepare a budget annually and submit it to the council and be responsible for the administration of the budget after it goes into effect; and recommend to the council any changes in the budget which they deem desirable.
D. Submit to the council a report after the end of the fiscal year on the finances and administrative activities of the city for the preceding year.
E. Keep the council advised of the financial condition and future needs of the city, and make recommendations as he deems desirable.
F. Perform such other duties as may be prescribed by law or by ordinance.
G. Serve as the Trust Manager for the Watonga Public Works Authority and Watonga Economic Development Authority.
Salary is competitive to the area and will be dependent upon qualifications. Full-time residency is expected, within a reasonable time frame, as approved by the City Council. The City offers a competitive benefits package.
Watonga desires candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance or closely related field, and five (5) years’ experience in public administration including three (3) years at a Department Head or Division Manager level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
