Holiday excitement and free family fun are in store as this year’s City of Yukon holiday festivities begin on Saturday, November 17. Included are the grand opening of Yukon’s beautiful holiday wonderland: Christmas in the Park, the Kringle Karnival, the annual Chill Your Cheeks 5K Run and the Jingle Walk. Other events are scheduled during the holiday season.
Christmas in the Park is Oklahoma’s premiere Christmas lights tour. Motorists drive along miles of illuminated fun to enjoy a beautiful presentation of light, movement, and music. Included are over 450 lighted displays and over 4 million Christmas lights twinkling across 100 acres of three interconnecting city parks.
Christmas in the Park opens at 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 17, then runs from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. nightly through New Year’s Eve. The tour includes Yukon City Park, Freedom Trail Playground and at Chisholm Trail Park.
New this year, stop by several “selfie stations” scattered throughout the parks. These festive stations are a great backdrop for a family photo or your next profile picture. Be sure to tag the City of Yukon in your pictures!
At the Santa Express Train Station, young and old alike will love taking photos in the adorable Gingerbread Family Photo Cutouts, in the airplane, on the toy train or by Czechers, the massive Polar Bear! Various costumed Christmas characters are often in the parks and are happy to pose for photos. You may even see Santa Claus! And the ever-popular Santa Express Train returns to give you an enchanting ride among the millions of Christmas lights.
Rides on the Santa Express Train are available for $2 per person at Chisholm Trail Park from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. every night through New Year’s Eve, weather permitting. Children three and under ride for free. The train loops through the lights of Chisholm Trail Park.
There are also 2.2 miles of walking trails through the parks for those who enjoy viewing the lights on foot. Walkers who plan to walk in Chisholm Trail Park, as well as those who want to visit Santa, are encouraged to park in the Oklahoma Parking Lot, located on the north end of Chisholm Trail Park. Those who want to walk in City Park are encouraged to park in front of the Yukon Community Center, 2200 S. Holly Ave.
Admission is free and donations that help support the annual event are merrily accepted at the Chisholm Trail Park exit.
The Kringle Karnival returns to celebrate the opening on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Karnival is now located at the north end of Chisholm Trail Park, 500 W. Vandament. This event now features live music, a reindeer petting zoo, pictures with Santa, inflatables, train rides, crafts, concession food trucks, and carnival games! Admission, as always, is FREE!
The Chill Your Cheeks 5K Run, presented by Academy Sports and Outdoors, begins at 5:00 p.m. at Chisholm Trail Park on November 17. It is a certified course sanctioned by USATF Oklahoma. More than 500 runners are expected at the festive race this year. Runners follow a course that takes them along area streets and ultimately through the beautiful illuminated Christmas in the Park lights. They hear Christmas Music played as they pass through City Park. Registration is available online at www.raceentry.com or through Tim Rhodes at 405-350-8920 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Other sponsors for Chill Your Cheeks are Yanda & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Bedlam Law, Yukon Optimist Sports Club, McBride Orthopedic Hospital, and True Sky Credit Union.
Before the Chill Your Cheeks 5K, the Mascot Dash kicks off the festivities at 4:30 p.m. Mascots from all over compete in a 100-yard dash. Mascots will be there from local high schools, local colleges and many popular restaurants and companies.
The Jingle Walk begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Boot Trail in Chisholm Trail Park. It is a half mile fun walk that travels through Chisholm Trail Park’s millions of glowing Christmas lights. On-site registration begins at 5:30 p.m., and the event is free. All participants in the Jingle Walk will receive a festive jingle bell necklace.
