TULSA – Elaine Carr, mayor of West Siloam Springs, is the recipient of the 2009 Oklahoma Mayor of the Year Award representing communities with less than 5,000 populations. She was presented the award from the Mayors Council of Oklahoma (MCO) during today’s Oklahoma Municipal League Annual (OML) Awards Breakfast.
Carr has been an active member of the West Siloam Springs community since high school.
Now, in addition to being a mayor, she has a full-time job and works in a family business. During her tenure the city has benefitted from her expertise in delivering grants, negotiating contracts, working with emergency services, and helping with community projects. These continuous efforts for the last nine years have placed her community in a position to grow and prosper.
The MCO award recognizes the dedication and commitment brought to the highest elected post in municipal government. Criteria for consideration requires nominees be an MCO member and in elected municipal office at the time of presentation. Additionally, nominees must complete a minimum of three years of service in an elected municipal office and their municipality must be an OML member.
The Oklahoma Conference of Mayors was formed in 1991 as an organization to represent the concerns and views of the body of the state's mayors and to serve as a vehicle for the development and implementation of programs of multi-jurisdictional cooperation between cities and towns designed to lessen the burden of local government.
