TULSA – Bill Fanning, mayor of Woodward, is the recipient of the 2009 Oklahoma Mayor of the Year Award representing communities with 5,000-plus populations. He was presented the award from the Mayors Council of Oklahoma (MCO) at today’s Oklahoma Municipal League (OML) Annual Awards Breakfast.
Examination of Mayor Fanning’s tenure and leadership by example certainly comes to mind. Whether it was a home for the elderly, improved parks, or bringing an Air Vac Life Team to town, he has been involved. He helped the municipality pass a $25 million bond issue to fund the regional park expansion. Not only did he secure 81 percent voter approval to get the job done but then he delivered a former president to the year’s 4th of July celebration to commemorate the park’s grand opening.
The MCO award recognizes the dedication and commitment brought to the highest elected post in municipal government. Criteria for consideration requires nominees be an MCO member and in elected municipal office at the time of presentation. Additionally, nominees must complete a minimum of three years of service in an elected municipal office and their municipality must be an OML member.
The Oklahoma Conference of Mayors was formed in 1991 as an organization to represent the concerns and views of the body of the state's mayors and to serve as a vehicle for the development and implementation of programs of multi-jurisdictional cooperation between cities and towns designed to lessen the burden of local government.
