POSITION TITLE: Surveying TechnicianDEPARTMENT: Engineering

LEADERSHIP: Provides co-worker leadership to others through motivation, team building, 
and providing feedback.

•As a position directly affecting the safety of others, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of City of Enid’s substance abuse policy, including random drug and alcohol testing. 
•Possession of a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License with acceptable driving record. 

POSITION PURPOSE: To provide improved quality of life for Enid residents by providing assistance in the collection of required surveying information for municipal improvement projects. 

•Provide assistance to Party Chief Surveyor in all aspects of surveying municipal improvement projects. 
•Calculate dimensions, square footage, profile and component specifications, and material quantities, using calculator or computer. 
•Analyze proposed site factors and design maps, graphs, tracings, and diagrams to illustrate findings. 
•Read and review project blueprints and structural specifications to determine dimensions of structure or system and material requirements. 
•Prepare daily reports and document project activities and data. 
•Confer with Party Chief Surveyor to determine project details. 
•Provide assistance to construction inspectors to ensure conformance to design specifications and applicable codes. 
•Confer with Party Chief Surveyor on the planning and conducting of field surveys to locate new sites and analyze details of public services’ project sites. 
•Stay current on developments in field of land surveying. 
•Provide assistance to other departments as needed. 
•Provide support to other members of the Engineering Department and perform other duties as required. 


•Demonstrates efficiently and accurately the use of equipment and following of procedures in performing land and engineering surveys. 
•The employee’s job-related performance promotes the smooth and efficient operation of the Engineering Department. 
•Adequate records are accurately recorded and organized in an efficient manner.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCEAssociates Degree. Degree in Surveying or classes in the Core curriculum for Land Surveyors preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES: Additional related training preferred. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, and their applications. 

Engineering and Technology — Knowledge of the practical application of land surveying. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to obtain data for project management. 

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to use Total Station, TDS data collector, and a level and rod for surveying and data collection. 
Basic ability to use hand tools such as sledgehammer, pick, shovel, etc. 
Handle multiple tasks simultaneously. 
Accurate and attentive to detail. 
Good communications and public relations abilities. 
Moderate typing and computer application skills. 
Ability to assist and support others. 
Able to operate telephone, PC, copier, and other basic business machines. 


FINGER DEXTERITY: Manual dexterity sufficient to work with the fingers. 

VISUAL ABILITIES: Normal vision, with or without corrective lenses. 
Close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus. 

PHYSICAL STRENGTH: PDC Level: Medium Employee lifts/carries 45 lbs. occasionally (less than 33% of the time or 1-100 times per day. Heavy physical activity performing strenuous daily activities of a product/technical nature. Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, climbing and use of arms and hands for handling, reaching, lifting, or carrying objects. 

LANGUAGE/COMPREHENSION: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write basic correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.  

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in standardized situations.  

MATHEMATICS ABILITY: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, and coordinates. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 

WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS:Regular – 8 hour shift, typically 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, but may be varied to accommodate construction schedule. 

Other–Variable lunch period and breaks in coordination with other personnel. 

WORK CONDITIONS:75% outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (for instance, rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.). 25% well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation. 

Noise level: Moderate to Loud. Hearing protection as required. 

Other work conditions:Occasional exposure to air contamination such as dust. 
Possible exposure to poison ivy, bee stings, and other outdoor hazards. 


Additional coursework in related field.Associate’s Degree or equivalent in related field. 
5-7 years related experience.8+ years related experience. 
Specialized coursework in drafting and/or surveying.Advanced coursework in drafting and/or surveying. 
Advanced computer aided design.Expert computer aided design.
