The City of San Marcos operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The San Marcos City Council is comprised of a Mayor and six Council Members. The City Council appoints a City Manager to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization.
The City of San Marcos seeks a visionary leader with a collaborative spirit and a commitment to open and transparent government. The successful candidate will have leadership skills to lead multiple projects and initiatives with accountability while keeping a focus on the City’s vision and goals. Additionally, the successful candidate will have strong financial skills including experience in prioritizing a budget based on service needs and the ability to analyze policy options in a fiscal manner.
The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business, or a related field. A Master’s degree in public administration or business administration is preferred. The ideal candidate for this position will have ten or more years of progressively responsible municipal government operations experience, including five years of experience as a city manager or assistant city manager in a comparable or larger city. Experience in meet and confer and community policing is preferred, as is previous experience in a university community.
